verbal language and is, therefore, capable of influencing literature, s dance as the capacity to relate concepts, narratives, and emotional content in a manner that is similar to prose or
poetry (Hanna 40). The relationship between literature and dance is reciprocal, as one influences the other. This relationship was acknowledged at the 2000 Bethesda Literary Festival, as it included
performance by both student and professional dance troupes (Hanna 40). Additionally, anthropological and psychological research substantiates the importance of nonverbal communication, that is, gestures and movement, to effective verbal communication
(Hanna 40). Dance and verbal language are structurally similar in that they both comprised of vocabulary, which in dance consists of gestures and steps, and grammar, which in dance
are the rules that are applied to sequencing dance steps in order to provide meaning (Hanna 40). Dance, as with verbal language, as the capacity to invoke strong emotion, which
is often accomplished within the context of storytelling. For instance, the Nutcracker ballet, which was first performed in 1890, was derived from a lengthy fairy tale by E.T.A. Hoffman
(Hanna 40). While many dances are narrative in nature, others are more like poetry, as they deal primarily in abstraction and metaphor, such as using the motion of a foot,
