some specific questions about the earlier work. Discussion Angels and demons is devoted to what Brown describes as an age-long battle between science and the Roman Catholic Church; scientists are
represented by an order called the "Illuminati" (Brown, 2003). In Browns scenario, the Illuminati are portrayed as benevolent people who hid among the Masons in order to continue their actions
against the Church; however, over the centuries they have been corrupted and now are engaging in horrific acts and have at last found a way to destroy their most hated
enemy: the Vatican (Brown, 2000). Was there really a split between science and religion during the Baroque period? Yes, there was, and it is often found in the changing art
of the time; the word "Baroque" is most usually associated with art. The rift between material and spiritual values was also expressed in the poetry of the Baroque era; one
source mentions two religious, Saint Teresa of Avila and Saint John of the Cross, who were poets and who "came late in the sixteenth century. Saint Teresa died in 1582,
St. John in 1591" (Raine, 1945). But by the time these poets wrote their works, "Copernicus had already set the round earth in motion ... The medieval world and the
modern, the setting and the rising stars, were in the sky together ... As the rift between the spiritual and the material values widened, the Great picked sides" (Raine, 1945).
