Discussion The first thing a reader of both books will notice is that they are extremely similar in construction. They both start with a gruesome murder in which the victim is mutilated; they both concern secret organizations; the protagonist in both books is Robert Langdon; and they both feature a fast-paced race throughout European locations as Langdon solves the mystery. And there are many facts sprinkled throughout the books that give a very realistic air to the tales, as noted above. In the case of Angels and Demons, some of the real things that Brown throws into the mix include the work of Bernini; the particle physics lab (CERN) in Switzerland; the mention of Eastern Air Lines and Logan Airport in Boston; and the Illuminati. Bernini was an artist and sculptor who designed many of the fountains that still exist in Rome. Since much of the action of the book takes place in Rome, the Bernini fountains feature prominently in it. One of Berninis works is worth a special mention: Romans call it "Berninis Chick" and its located in the Piazza della Minerva (Gian Lorenzo Bernini, 2006). Pope Alexander VII commissioned Bernini to design a support structure to hold an Egyptian obelisk, and Bernini designed an elephant-who appears to be smiling (Gian Lorenzo Bernini, 2006). In order to understand why the animal is grinning, "the viewer must head around to the rear end of the animal and to see that its muscles are tensed and its tail is shifted to the left.
