In What Happy People Know: Youre Only 6 Steps Away from Happiness, Baker says our past embedded programming can be overcome in daily life by accepting the fact that life isnt perfect, using strategies to identify what we really want out of life, and acting on strengths and true desires. His means of accomplishing this is through self-discovery strategies and six steps on how to become happy. Bakers position is that when humans first evolved, stress was an excellent motivator and fear was the embedded tool for sensing danger. Today, fear is not in daily life, in most cases, but since we have a hardwired need to experience fears, we turn it toward a thousand different things. This doesnt serve us. We feed our own misery. Baker says it is impossible to feel fear and happiness at the same time, which is why cognitive therapies arent enough. The solution is developing a true sense of self, accepting the truth that the world isnt perfect, and acting on what feeds happiness. Baker defines happy people as fighters, who understand life is hard, but dont break down when it gets hard.
