that is incomparable to many others. DALLAS: THE HISTORY Dallas official history began in 1846 when it became the county seat for Dallas County. Cotton was the major
crop at the time, although during those years there were many who were intrigued with the California gold rush and left to find their fortunes. In 1849 the Dallas
population had exploded to 430 people. Dallas voted to secede from the union in 1861 on the eve of the Civil War. Dallas was further southwest than most of
the fighting that was going on, but the Dallasites did their share for the South by sending supplies to the war-ravaged areas. Dallas also stored cotton for many of
the southern mills that were being burned and destroyed. After the war and Reconstruction eras Dallas became well known for the number of outlaws that came there either to live
or just in passing through. Belle Starr got her start in Dallas as a dancehall singer, and later diversified into selling stolen horses and "harboring outlaws" (Dallas History 2002,
PG). Another celebrity was Doc Holliday who sent up a dental practice in Dallas, but found out that gambling was much more profitable. There was also Sam Bass
who robbed trains for a living but the living didnt last long, since he was killed in Round Rock, Texas not long after robbing four trains in two months in
