truly analyzing the symbolism within is difficult, at best. Both artists presented very different forms of painting or art, and were separated by centuries. But, both artists truly utilized symbolism,
whether or not the full extent of which can ever truly be known. The following paper examines symbolism in the art of Dali and Bosch. Dali and Bosch
In relationship to Dalis work one author notes that, "Dalis use of grotesque imagery is a way of bringing these potentially harmful objects
of the unconscious to the surface, thereby negating their threat" (Ross). In this one can clearly see the symbolic potential of all of Dalis works. One particular painting that can
be examined is Daddy Longlegs of the Evening-Hope. Ross states that, it was painted when Dali was in exile within the United
States and it demonstrates how war possesses great moral issues and chaos. "The painting depicts an impossibly mutilated, elongated figure stretched over the limb of a dead tree" (Ross). The
head of the figure is Dalis and across the head crawls a daddy long legs which "is a reference to a French legend that says that the sighting of a
daddy longlegs in the evening hours is a good omen, a portent of good luck" (Ross). In another painting a critic for
the Metropolitan Museum of Art states indicates that the painting "The Accommodations of Desire," from 1929 offers symbols. In this particular painting there is, again, bugs, ants. "Dal? employs Freudian
symbols, such as ants, to symbolize his overwhelming sexual desire" (Voorhies). Clearly this painting, and the previous, possess many symbolic images, and clearly the full extent of Dalis symbolism cannot
