and practices, as they have functioned in Tibet for over a thousand years. It is a book that entices the reader toward further study, yet also provides a comprehensive guide
to the Buddhist faith. Tibetans practice a form of Buddhism called Lamaism, In this belief, the Dalai Lama is considered to be the ruler of Tibet and its highest
spiritual leader. There are different sects of Lamaism, and the chief sect, the "Yellow Hat," is headed by the Dalai Lama. In spiritual practice, the form of Buddhism that the
Dalai Lama teaches is quite similar to Zen Buddhism. Adherents of Zen Buddhism believe that following Buddhist practices will lead to a state of spiritual enlightenment. The central message
of Buddhism is that all creatures, one of great intelligence, and even those that we refer to as "dumb" animals, want happiness and want to avoid suffering (Gyatso 2). Therefore,
everyone endeavors to find a method by which they can experience happiness and avoid suffering. However, the establishment of happiness and the avoidance of suffering cannot be gained as fully
