and political leader of Tibet, a practice that started in the 17th century (Jackson, 2001). However, there have been Dalai Lamas since the 15th century; apparently it is the
practice of combining the two leadership roles that has evolved more recently. For most of those who practice Tibetan Buddhism, "the Dalai Lama is a figure at once both
divine and human: he assumes the form of an ordinary Buddhist monk, but is, in fact, an enlightened Buddha who has consciously taken rebirth in order to help suffering beings"
(Jackson, 2001). The current Dalai Lama, born Tenzin Gyatso, is a charming, cheerful man with a broad smile and a twinkle in his eye who has captivated people around
the world. The Man His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, to give him his full title, was born Lhama Dhondrub on July 6, 1935in in the town of
Taktser, which lies in north-eastern Tibet (His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, 2005). At the age of two he was recognized "as the incarnation of the 13th
Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso" (His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, 2005). Upon recognition, " Lhama Dhondrub was renamed Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso, and is
