Sky, are women caught in relationships with men that seem to be less than fulfilling. They also appear to be women who perhaps disregard a mans feelings for her, or
rely on men to somehow support them in relationship to the social expectation regarding men and women and marriage. The following paper compares and contrasts these two women.
Daisy in The Great Gatsby and Kit in The Sheltering Sky In Fitzgeralds The Great Gatsby the story revolves around Jay Gatsby. Gatsby
was apparently poor when he was young and he loved Daisy and she him. But, she could not be with him, according to his memory, because he was poor and
so he moved away and made a great deal of money, hoping that when he returned she would want him. Daisy, however, is married to Tom. But, this does not
keep her from playing around with Gatsby and accepting his invitation to his home. She is impressed with what she sees, the wealth and the opulence that is demonstrated in
his house. Gatsby "revalued everything in his house according to the measure of response it drew from her" (Fitzgerald 73). In this respect the reader knows that Daisy is impressed
with the wealth he possesses, and likely also very taken with his obvious infatuation with her. She does not stop his adoration of her, telling him she is married, and
thus plays the part of the desired woman which Gatsby likes as well: "It excited him, too, that many men had already loved Daisy-it increased her value in his eyes"
