Great Gatsby and Amanda Wingfield, the mother in Tennesse Williams haunting play, The Glass Menagerie. Amanda appears to be a middle-aged Southern belle who cannot release the sexual triumphs
of her youth, and Daisy is like a confectionery doll atop a mid-Western wedding cake?all sugar and no substance. However, there is more to both of these characters then is
readily apparent when they are first introduced. Both Williams and Fitzgerald build these women into fascinating studies on character. While they both appear to be the epitome of shallowness and
superficiality, Amandas gentile Southern fa?ade actually conceals a woman who is strong, motivated and highly principled when it comes to the welfare of her children. In many ways, the ideas
she holds for her children are out of kilter with reality, but?nevertheless?Amanda holds fast to her ideals and constantly endeavors to provide as best she can for the future of
her offspring. Daisy Buchanan has never had the hardships endured by Amanda to temper her personality and perhaps hone it into something finer. Like Amanda, she appears shallow and
superficial on the surface, but ?unlike Amanda?when one digs deeper into her character, the discovery isnt bedrock, as it is in Amandas case, but quicksand. Daisy hide a deeper meaning
to her character, and that character is evil due to the unthinking nature of her superficiality. Hers, is a careless sort of disregard that places her own agenda first?no matter
what?and, in the process, uses up the lives and endurance of those around her. Amanda Wingfield is the prototypical Southern gentlewoman. She comes from a background of strict Southern
gentility and gracious living, in which some of her fondest memories are of wealthy, well-dressed gentlemen callers and who can to see her while she was still within the bosom
