This book provides information on the foods that the people ate and how they survived on a daily basis. Where they lived, what they wore, and what they talked about
is all contained in this volume by David Matz. Matz does not seemingly take a position. Rather, he relays information about the period of time in an attempt to provide
the contemporary reader with information. Perhaps he wants to show how things were very different in some ways, but not so different in others. One might take that a step
further and suggest that his goal was for the reader to use the information as a comparison to modern life. The book is organized by subject as opposed to providing
a chronological history. The contents include, in order, the following subjects: Education, slavery, food and dining, housing, travel, politics, family life, holidays and leisure, sports and amusements, religion and retirement.
The author provides information not only on the wealthy classes, but explains how the slaves lived as well. Matz (2001) writes in a direct manner that draws the reader
in. Examples are provided and there is a sense that the author feels compelled to provide information so the reader can compare and contrast the modern day with ancient times.
If he does have an argument, it might be that people are not so different throughout history. Of course, to a great extent, his goal in writing this book is
to inform the public. Evidence to support the authors ideas comes not from modern writers but from people of the day on which he writes. The author in providing information
also goes into the details of where the information comes from. After all, researchers are gleaning the material from somewhere and the data is not commonplace. For example, Matz (2001)
