Work for the DSM-V revision is already underway with different Work Groups already beginning the process for the next revision (Wideger & Mullins-Sweatt, 2007). There has always been criticism
of the DSM. Criticism is based primarily on the argument that it categorizes individuals without taking into consideration numerous other factors in that individuals life (Lopez et al., 2006). The
DSM focuses on the negative, what is wrong within the person rather than viewing these disorders as being caused by the situation or the environment in which the individual functions
(Lopez et al., 2006). The Editors of the DSM-IV-TR observe in their preface that the categories provide a foundation for research and diagnosis (APA, 2000). They provide a common language
for clinicians so that if one is discussing a patient who has bipolar disorder, the other has a relative idea of the symptoms and problems that individual is experiencing. This
is one of the strengths of the DSM. Wideger and Mullins-Sweatt (2007) identify other strengths and benefits of having this type of manual. These include simplicity and tradition. Many
clinicians rely on the DSM to diagnose their patients. It is credible insofar as it is published by the American Psychiatric Association. It is also credible in that it is
supported by the ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases) from the World Health Organization (APA, 2007). Further, clinicians need the codes published in the DSM to be reimbursed for services.
