used in other countries. Prior to the publication of the first DSM, there was no standard, no set of criteria for psychiatrists to use to diagnose any mental illness. No
doubt, this led to vast differences in how any given mental illness or disorder was diagnosed. The other reference that is used, especially by nurses, is the International Statistical Classification
of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD). Of the two, the DSM is more specific in its diagnostic criteria. However, both are based on the medical model. The DSM-IV-TR uses
the coding system of ICD to comply with HIPAA requirements (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Organization 2008). The DSM uses a multiaxial system for diagnostic purposes (Diagnostic
and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 2008). The purpose of the different axes is to offer a more comprehensive view of the patient than would be gained through a simple
diagnostic procedure (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 2008). The DSM has been revised a number of times. The most recent is the fourth revision with additional text
revisions and is referred to as the DSM IV-TR (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 2008). The Text Revision in 2000 was about the descriptive text used in the
guide, basically simply changing errors that had been found in the text (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Organization 2008). There are five axes in this reference: 1. Axis
