Additionally criteria includes whether or not there are concurrent deficits or impairments in adaptive functioning, that is, whether the individual can effectively meet the standards expected by his or her age. For a positive diagnosis of mental retardation, deficits should exist in at least two of the following areas: :communication, self-care, home living, social/interpersonal skills, use of community resources, self-direction, functional academic skills, work, leisure health and safety" (52). Mild-IQ from 50-55 to 70; Moderate-IQ 35-40 to 50-55; Severe-20-25 to 35-40; Profound-below 20-25; Unspecified-IQ cannot be measured, as in infants. Learning Disorders: Reading Disorder-Standardized testing shows achievement that is substantially lower than expected for the individuals chronological age, intelligence and age-appropriate education. Mathematics Disorder-Same as above, but measuring math achievement. Disorder of Written Expression: This entails writing skills, as measured by standardized tests, that are substantially below those expected for the individuals age, measured intelligence and age appropriate education (54). Motor Skills Disorder: Motor coordination necessary for daily living is below expected level for age and intelligence. Communication Disorders: Expressive Language Disorder-Standardized testing shows expressive language to be below expected level considering both non-verbal cognitive ability and receptive language development. Category includes Mixed Receptive-Expressive Language Disorder; Phonological Disorder; Stuttering; and Communication Disorder, Not Specified. Pervasive Developmental Disorders: Autism-lists of symptoms are presented in 3 separate categories. A diagnosis of autism is made when six (or more) items from each category apply to the client, "with at least two from (1), and one each from (2) and (3)" (59).
