Both books ended up discussing the need to be flexible in the face of changing circumstances. In Schwarzkopfs book, he places much of the credit for logistical success of the Desert Storm fight on the shoulders of William "Gus" Pagonis, who oversaw the necessary logistical activities to make it through the Persian Gulf War. Schwarzkopf actually details the need for important leadership and logistics early on in his own autobiography, as he discusses General George G. Marshalls attempts to deliver aid to the Soviets during World War II. Ironically enough, U.S. soldiers attempted to deliver that aid through the Persian corridor; " . . . ships would sail to the head of the Persian Gulf, where their cargoes would be unloaded and trucked north through Iran, across the Caucasus, and into the Soviet Union"1. The problem came, he saw, in Iran - in that "too many shipments werent making it through" because of the mountain tribes who would attack the convoys "and help themselves to whatever they wanted"2. Even at an early age, he noted, the need for leadership in logistics in the Persian Gulf would be the utmost importance. He entrusted Pagonis for the job, and he came through in flying colors for his expertise in logistics and his management skills. Pagonis has been able to translate his success in logistics in the field to the corporate world as well, which is where Druckers analysis comes in.
