families literally and hopelessly watch as their perfectly normal child slips into a type of void created by an abnormality in the chromosomes. Downs Syndrome affects as many as 250,000
families each year, but research is ongoing in the hopes that one day this genetic misfiring may be corrected. WHAT IS DOWNS SYNDROME?
Scientifically, Downs Syndrome is called Trisomy 21. This means that the 21st chromosome has abnormalities amounting to a replication of the 21st chromosome; sometimes two and three sets(DSA 2004). Most
average human beings have twenty three pairs of chromosomes, but in children born with Downs Syndrome, there is an extra chromosome. This chromosomal difference accounts for the delayed and impaired
development. At the date of this paper scientists are still not a hundred percept sure why Downs Syndrome happens. The prevailing myth used to be that children born with Downs
