Gary Bloom in his article Doorstops or Deliverance, questions the benefits that have been and will be gained from a continued push for technology in the schools. This paper is an example response to the issues posed in Blooms article. Mr. Bloom, As a long time supporter of technology education I had expected to find your article full of the same rhetoric that every other old school educator or psychologist has offered. However, upon reading your article I must say that my attitude has changed. I am not firmly convinced that all computer or advanced technology should be removed completely from the schools, but because of the valid arguments you present within your article, I am more willing to entertain the very real possibility that our values and priorities have become skewed. The computer allows for an expansion of borders on many fronts for the learner, it can be said. Not only can classrooms expand their classroom to include the great libraries of the country, experience the real time explorations of an astronaut, but can also aide in a multicultural understanding of other students in classrooms across the world. However, as you ably point out, for all its glitter, computer technology is not pure gold. The Alliance for Childhood decided to study the effects of computers on children and what they discovered was that programs which are passive in nature, which equate to simple mouse clicks and button pushing did little to enhance the learning process, and in fact may stifle creativity and imagination,(Leggett 1996), thus agreeing with your point about a zero sum game.
