mercilessly teased by a bully because of his name (Ishmael Leseur, which the narrator considers his own "disease," which has no cure - and that no one else in the
world has). As the reader plows through the book, however, its quite clear that "Ishmael Leseur Syndrome," as the narrator dubs it, is little more than the onset of puberty
gone somewhat awry, as it does in the case of many 14-year-old boys. This disease, Ishmael points out in a self-pitying mode, "results in the sufferer saying and doing things
that would embarrass even a complete moron" (p. 3). In other words, welcome to puberty, where it seems as though almost anyone between the ages of 13 and 15 suffer
their own personal types of Ishmael Lesuer Syndrome. But there are some other important lessons this book teaches beyond the typical coming-of-age ones.
The one huge lesson, in fact, that Ishmael learns near the end of the book is that, many times, bullies like Barry are, themselves, bullied by Life. And when individuals
such as Ishmael and his strange crew of misfits pushes back against the Barrys of the world and stand up for themselves and their pride, they find that the Barrys
of the world are actually as afraid of life, if not moreso, than those who have Ishmael Lesuer Syndrome. When Ishmael has his chance to take revenge on Barry Bagsley
in front of the whole school by praying for him (mockingly, it seems), he cant do it. What happened? Barry Bagsley became human, with parents. "I couldnt stop thinking about
Mrs. Bagsley and how embarrassed and hurt and sad she was going to be because of me . . ." (p. 239). There were others who would be embarrassed as
