Debuting in 1999 one is both appalled and amazed at the damage that is done to Western stereotypes of the Iranian woman. The documentarians follow for a period of time, the trials of several Iranian women as they sought divorce. Mir Hoseini and Longinotto could have provided the same trite stereotype of the oppressed Iranian woman, but instead chose to show a different side, perhaps a truer version of what Iranian women are really like. One of the women who were chronicled was only sixteen at the time. Jamileh claims that her husband beats her, but, as the judge states, there are no bruises to substantiate her claim. The viewers discover that in Iran, and by Islamic law, a woman who is awarded a divorce is given ten thousand dollars upon departure. However, the court systems are arranged such that the older cleric/judges scarcely make it easy to collect. However, in some of the cases that the filmmakers show, two versions of a divorce begin to emerge. "The judge, who is a fascinating character as well, sits in the courtroom all day, calmly listens to all these women, and hardly ever budges"(Anderson). In many of the cases a wife has brought charges against her husband for failing to financially provide for their family, perhaps engaging in activities which have threatened the familys financial survival. Having a third party admonish her husband is a way for a woman to legally shame her husband into doing his Islamic husbandly duties. In another case a father who has been accused of being too heavy handed with the women in his family tells the judge that he was only abusive because of the request for a divorce ...
