identify many women-related issues pertaining to the War Between the States (also known as the U.S. Civil War). In this paper, we will answer some questions pertaining to womens roles
in the war. Describe the various ways the war affected the northern and southern home fronts As with any type war,
this particular one did end up playing havoc with the so-called "gender roles" that most women were called upon to play during the war effort. For one thing, it wasnt
uncommon for Confederate women to go out and plow the fields or oversee the plantations while their menfolk were off fighting. Nor was it uncommon for these "belles" to become
involved in politics, after a fashion (Clinton et al 136). Still, most women in the Confederacy ended up staying home and
praying for the safety of their men (Clinton et al 136). But these belles also learned to take up arms in defense of their homes (as well see in more
detail below). But most of them considered their lives indoors (especially the more genteel of them), continuing to "sew Confederate flags and refused to attend operas or concerts for fear
of unpleasant confrontations" (Clinton et al 140). For some of the Confederate women, war was distant, but for others, it was "a
disruptive force that turned their lives upside down" (Huntington 12). Women in the North were somewhat different, however. According to Huntington, industrialization
in the North meant that women were exposed to the philosophy that individual responsibility and self-control would be better served in industry, meaning that women should stay at the home
