does not escape him: that the one who comes to teach learns the keenest of lessons, while those who come to learn, learn nothing"(Coetzee 1999)
This statement made about the main character, David, sums up the realization and theme of the novel, Disgrace. Within its pages the reader is drawn into the sordid
and often ironic decisions which form the human condition in certain parts of the world. The abstract concept of disgrace is made concrete in this novel and examined through the
actions and interactions of the various characters as they deal with life in a tumultuous Africa. The act of being disgraced is quite the abstract principle. Yet, in the
novel, Coetzee, allows each character to add to the concept their own definition. Likewise, the concept of disgrace is exampled in the way that each character reacts to the situations
which would propose to bring disgrace upon them. For example, Lucy, whom is brutally raped and beaten, refuses to allow the incident to break her spirit. To charge the men
formally, she realizes, would serve no purpose since justice is as rare a concept as rain in the desert. Disgrace is a humbling emotion and a situation where one of
two outcomes are possible. All of the characters indicate and evidence these outcomes. One outcome is that of insight and wisdom. Lucy, whom seems
the most removed from the disgrace, though it is she who suffers the physical assault, acts as a buffer against which David begins to measure himself. Wisdom is gained through
the trial of enduring disgrace. This is certainly true for David as well when he is brought up on charges of having a sexual liaison with one of his students.
