a person can know whether he/she has a predisposition toward a certain disease or health issue, and can take steps to prevent, or at least delay, the onset. However, with that knowledge comes another, darker side, namely that the information could be used to discriminate against a person in the area of hiring for a job or applying for insurance. The insurance situation, especially, is a concern. There is some worry that insurance companies may choose not to insure people who are healthy, but may be genetically pre-disposed to future disease onset such as diabetes, breast cancer or other such diseases (NHGRI, 2008). Others are worried that someone with a genetic pre-disposition may not be hired with the fear that there could be a future disease onset (NHGRI, 2008). This is called "genetic discrimination," and is defined as unfair treatment due to differences in DNA, that might pre-dispose that person toward getting a certain disease (NHGRI, 2008). During May 2008, President George Bush signed the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA), geared to protect Americans against discrimination based on their genetic information (NHGRI, 2008). The question we need to ask ourselves here, however, is whether such discrimination, legally, can already take place. The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) points out, and quite rightly, that "every person has dozens of DNA differences that could increase his or her chance of getting a disease..." In other words, just because someones DNA shows a predisposition toward Alzheimers or diabetes, it doesnt mean that person is going to necessarily get the disease (NHGRI, 2008). Even though someone may have ...
