it. In many nations around the world discrimination is still widely practiced. In the United States discrimination was seen for the destructive and divisive practice that it is and enacted
legislation so as to curtail its prevalence. But, it still exists. How does someone learn discrimination toward something or someone? One way would be that racism and discrimination
are taught and a child is brought up in a culture that routinely considers these actions acceptable and desirous. Another possible way, one might argue, is a misplaced perception on
the part of a majority, especially if the socio-economic differences are great. For example, a wealthy person would look down upon the impoverished individual as if that person did something
to deserve being poor. Much of the residue from the fifties, sixties and seventies, still remains. Faced with economic hardship, crushing prejudices, and glass ceilings, many minorities became frustrated to
the point of lashing out. This is a response that can be observed in any culture where a segment of the population is denied access to the basic needs, and
where dependence on a faulty system has left those dependent, ill equipped to take care of themselves. Though discrimination still exists in the
United States, when it is recognized and identified there are options, alternatives to simply suffering in silence. In the workplace, many companies have grievance policies, while others have specific Human
Resources departments that, among their other duties, have the responsibility for reporting and researching acts of discrimination. Sexual harassment still takes place on
the job site and though there are measures in place at most work areas, the woman who speaks up is likely to be considered or perceived differently than a man
