by J.C. Bruno Teboul, and was entitled "Case study: The language dilemma," and was found in the May 2002 issue of Management Communication Quarterly.
Though the case study was fictitious, its a strong example of what is happening today in the area of workforce diversity. This particular case examines what happens legally
when an employer attempts to institute an English-only work environment. As the employer found out in this case, attempting to do so was definitely not a good idea.
The facts of the case were that a boss (Matt Brown), who was successful in bringing his telecommunications company to a strong level, was
having problems with employee morale. He learned of this at a Christmas party when, during a "roast," it was found that one major complaint was that employees were being criticized
for speaking in their native tongues while on the job. The team leaders of two Filipino field employees were criticizing the employees for being "rude and exclusionary for speaking to
each other in Tagalog" (Teboul 603). It got worse after the Christmas party - one employee was complaining of sexual harassment from three Hispanic salesmen, who had hidden their intent
by speaking only in Spanish, even while they leered in her direction. Upon investigation, the salesmen proclaimed their innocence, even saying they never were looking at the woman in question.
But this led to forbidding Spanish to be spoken in the cafeteria. Another complaint was then lodged by African-American field reps who claimed that their Hispanic colleagues were holding out
on pertinent information because they were speaking in Spanish. The human resources director told the Hispanic technicians they were no longer to speak Spanish in the field, no matter what
