of Hurricane Katrina. In all cases, people were unprepared for disaster and, as a result, were injured or, in some cases, killed.
Its true that there are some things that simply cant be prepared for. But almost every household can -- and should -- have some short of preparation plan in the
event of a natural disaster. According to the Department of Homeland Securitys Web site (2008), the first step in any kind
of preparation is to have some kind of a family emergency plan. The site points out that family members may not be together when disaster happens, so its important to
plan in advance how members will keep in touch with one another, how theyll meet up, and what will happen in different situations (U.S. Government, 2008). Its also suggested that
the family set up an out-of-town contact for such a scenario, as many times during a disaster, a person that is not involved can act as the "point person" for
the other family members (U.S. Government, 2008). Other suggestions include ensuring that every family member has the phone number of the contact and coins (or a pre-paid phone card) to
get in touch with the emergency contact (U.S. Government, 2008). The other issue thats important for both families and business owners is
to understand what types of emergencies might come about (U.S. Government, 2008). For example, its given that, along the Gulf Coast between June and November, hurricanes will be an issue.
