however, as almost everyone knows, these is no such thing as a perfect world. This is especially the situation with knowledge flows; rather than freely flowing throughout an organization, knowledge
becomes bottled up in certain situations, or even worse, never really gets released. Or sometimes, knowledge does flow through, but somehow isnt decoded properly for various reasons that well delve
into later on in this paper. Getting knowledge flows moving properly in a domestic organization is tough enough. Imagine trying to get knowledge
moving throughout a multinational corporation - in such a situation, these is not only the typical knowledge blocks, but also issues of time, dimension and cultural flows.
The sad thing about this is "every firm constitutes a bundle of knowledge," explain Gupta and Govindarajan (2000, p. 473). This bundle of knowledge, the
authors go on to explain, serves as a good tool for differentiation and competitive advantage (Gupta and Govindarajan, 2000; see also Diterickx and Cool, 1989). Furthermore, most MNCs are able
to exist because they have a better, and stronger, ability to transfer and exploit knowledge more efficiently and effectively via intra-corporate means than via external market mechanisms (Gupta and Govindarajan,
2000). Furthermore, knowledge flows among MNCs not only along multiple directions, but also across multiple dimensions. Gupta and Govindarajan point out, for
example, the flow of information regarding a overseas subsidiarys financial performance to corporate headquarters as well as packaging technology that flows from a factory in Sweden to one in India.
