is able to portray real characters who are loveable despite their flaws. ONeills play, A Long Days Journey Into Night, has been analyzed for years. However, now, the analysis includes
not only a psychoanalytic analysis, but can be seen from the feminist and historical perspectives as well. This story is highly autobiographical and was published after ONeill had passed
away. Most of the reasons that this occurred so late is that it is commonly believed that this play is about Eugene and his highly dysfunctional family life when he
was a child. The parallels are nearly identical. In a nutshell, the play takes place in a New England summer house and revolves around a day in the life of
the Tyrone family. James, the father is an out of work actor. Mary, his wife, is opium addicted. Jamie, the older brother is an alcoholic and womanizer, and Edmund is
creative and sickly. Finally, after dismissing and avoiding the deeper issues which surround them all, they have to face who and what they have become as a family unit. From
a purely psychoanalytic point of view, this family epitomizes the term dysfunctional. The father, James, is battling depression because he is not fulfilled at his work, and feels that his
dreams and aspirations have been cruelly crushed. He tries to gloss over it by strutting around and acting like a celebrity, but in the end, it only reinforces the idea
that he is just the opposite. He is often belittling of everyone around him and is narcissist in nature. James has very little interaction with his children and is emotionally
