is such a notable character one has to wonder where Dickens drew his inspiration. During the time when he lived, Dickens recognized many evils in society. In Oliver Twist
he focused on the problem of the whole idea of poverty and class systems. It was a social commentary on society. His way to illustrate the solution to the problem
of class in society was to create characters who can get beyond the limitations and divisions of class identifications and see themselves as responsible humans. The people who read Dickens
works were often the kinds of people he was attacking. Dickens lived during the Victorian age which was known as the age of social criticism. Great Expectations was Dickens first
attack on class in society. If Dickens is strident in his outrage against those corrupt agencies for the poor, he is also generous in recognizing those social agencies that
seemed to be making a difference. It seems that he admired the way the Metropolitan Police handled themselves and it is commonly thought that Bucket of Bleak House was modeled
after several of the detectives he knew from the local department. Dickens routinely, then, chooses those who are the most vulnerable in
his novels to be the unlikely heroes. Most of them are of the working classes, poor, but in contrast with the wealthy that they come into contact with, have more
