These days, of course, we know better. We know that depression is a disease that is treatable. But how do we diagnose depression versus having a sad day or
simply not being motivated? According to Dryden-Lee and Edwards (2010), a depressive disorder consists of a group of symptoms reflecting sadness or
irritation that is of greater intensity and duration, as well as functional disabilities, than what is considered normal. Signs and symptoms are certainly characterized by negative thoughts and moods (Dryden-Lee
and Edwards, 2010). Theyre also characterized by changes in body function, such as excessive crying, low energy, body aches, libido and problems with eating and/or sleeping (Dryden-Lee and Edwards, 2010).
Depression has two types; neurotic and endogenous (Dryden-Lee and Edwards, 2010). Endogenous means that the depression is internally driven; it comes out of nowhere or might be genetic (Dryden-Lee and
Edwards, 2010). Neurotic means that the depression is the result of an environmental factor such as the death of someone close or other type of loss (Dryden-Lee and Edwards, 2010).
Beyond the actual symptoms of depression, psychologists and psychiatrists have also developed several models of depression. One of these models is called
"Learned Helplessness," a type of depression in which the person involved considers himself/herself to be a helpless victim, and consider that he/she doesnt have any control over anything (Yen, 1998).
