costs based per member, per year (PMPY) will escalate. Its estimated that costs will increase from $22.39 PMPY to $58.73 PMPY between 2001 and 2007.
Other than the normal price increase of drugs, there are a couple of trends impacting this cost. One is that the American Diabetes Association, in 2005,
had a new cut point for impaired fasting glucose - in other word, pre-diabetic patients were included in the costs (Brunk, 2005). In other words, patients with pre-diabetic glucose blood
levels were driving up the costs for HMOs (Brunk, 2005). What this means these days is that diabetes treatments are the
leading driver of prescription drug spending growth - replacing the lipid-lowering agents (Buono, 2008). The reason behind the increase is two-fold. One is that treatments have increased as patients are
shifting to newer drugs that have advantages over the older drugs (Buono, 2008). The newer drugs are faster-acting and theyre better when it comes to maintaining a consistent blood level,
while preventing disease complications (Buono, 2008). The problem is, theyre also driving up the cost of treatment. Second, with diabetes diagnoses on
the rise, more people are needing the drug therapies to help with controlling the disease (Buono, 2008). Its estimated that diabetes patients use up to three medications to keep the
disease in check (Buono, 2008). The irony is that much of this disease can be (and should be) controlled by lifestyle choices. But as the United States becomes more a
nation of obesity (even the children are overweight), diagnoses of diabetes will be on the rise. Also adding to the issue is
