specific items about its reputation as a cargo carrier. In looking at the companys problems, however, these seem to focus more on customer service.
In 2006, the company, which is headquartered in Germany, caused a ruckus when they announced they would be raising rates for some of its North American customers (Page,
2006). The difficulties that the company has had during the 2000s has included problems with hub integration, which has led to terrible delivery times and financial losses (Page, 2006).
In 2006, delays and disruptions from DHL cost the company $280 million in annual business volume as customers went to other shippers (Page,
2006). With service levels falling to as low as 67% in late 2005, there are many reasons why customers went to more reliable shippers (Page, 2006).
The main problem DHL has faced in its North American efforts has been that of logistics, rather than specific freight damage. Its acquisition of Airborne Express
was supposed to work that out, but instead, it added more troubles than it solved (Page, 2006). In response, DHL is now
working to strike a deal with UPS and turn its ABX Air Inc. and ASTAR Air Cargo Inc. to UPS Air Cargo to help stem its financial losses (Air Cargo
World, 2008). This comes because DHL could lose up to $1.3 billion in North America this year -- again because of service and distribution difficulties (Air Cargo World, 2008). So
