time. His ideas were so radical that most, it can be inferred, considered him something of a crackpot. Nonetheless, his ideas about education served to move education forward and provided
countless students with a better opportunity to learn. Likewise, James Banks contributions in education sought to provide many of the same goals as did Dewey, and yet, it can be
said, where they diverged, Banks seems to have improved upon an already good model. The implication for the theory of knowledge, theorized Dewey, was clear: the world is not
passively perceived and thereby known; active manipulation of the environment is involved integrally in the process of learning from the start(Dewey 1997). Dewey found more acceptable a theory of reality
holding that nature, as encountered in scientific and ordinary experience, is the ultimate reality and that man is a product of nature who finds his meaning and goals in life
here and now (Dewey 1997). Given this, then, he was readily accepted into a philosophical school of thought called The Chicago School. The Chicago School was comprised of some of
Americas brightest scholars and philosophers. They were a group of learned sociologists, psychologists and others, who studied the phenomenon of life during this time as it applied to any number
of growing social concerns. As such, the impact and theories developed about human development and growth, as well as the learning process were studied and researched. Based on this,
his book, The Child and the Curriculum stated that real education must begin first with experience, then build upon this foundation toward a more mature grasp of the subject matter.
