days, that Golden Rule has evolved into formal ethics programs in which companies develop specific standards and codes to ensure employees treat others, and are treated, in an ethical manner.
In this paper, weve been asked to develop an ethics program for a new management consulting services company that will employ
approximately 15 to 20 people. But before the plan can even get off the ground, we should first have some idea of what, exactly, business ethics is about.
"Right and wrong" are certainly the basis of ethics - obviously, anything along the lines of lying, cheating and stealing would be a gross
ethics violation. But there are more subtle shades of ethics - Compton (2007) points out that if, for example, a boss doesnt support philanthropic events, but demands that his/her employees
do so, thats an ethics violation (not to mention sending hugely mixed messages). This leads to the first rule in ethics,
namely that leadership needs to buy into the whole concept of an ethical program. Not only buy into it, but support it wholeheartedly. Zigarmi (2008) comments that the five most
important leadership behaviors necessary for creating an ethical organization are creation and communication of a clear vision for the organization, development of a personal sense of fairness (and encouraging others
to do the same), treating the change agents and whistleblowers with respect, building checks and balances when it comes to access to information and ensuring procedural fairness.
