that man perceived his world. However, Descartes began to splinter from the general Aristotelian beliefs and appears to have become intently curious about the logic of man, more like Plato.
He is particularly known for the founding of basic geometry and its principles. Given this shift, then, it is possible to see the Platonic influence in the development of Descartes
hyperbolic or methodic doubt. Descartes was the one who coined the phrase, "I think, therefore I am"(Descartes 1998). Descartes also believed that
mankind utilized the senses in determining reason, unlike Plato. Therefore, he was fascinated with reality, what is and what is not. Sometimes considered the father of modern philosophy, Rene Descartes
strove to sort out what was real and what was unsubstantiated common thought. But he went beyond the proving of this with his quest to understand that mechanism by which
reasoning occurred. Descartes saw the problem inherent with reasoning and the two functions in an experimental way. Therefore, in order to test the
reliability of his faculties he created the methodic doubt. Methodic doubt is when one sets aside the information gained by any sense that can be proven to be unreliable in
the circumstance. In other words, if something can go wrong with it, that sense is considered inconsequential to the final outcome. Descartes seems to arrive at a point where he
declares that there is no way to know for certain whether one is awake or asleep, that for any experience one may have, no matter how real it seems, it
