Rene Descartes, has been repeated often, both in philosophy classes and in humorous veins. The concept of reality from thought is an interesting one, and can be considered pretty funny,
too. Consider, for example, the joke of Descartes who, when being offered a drink at a party, responds "I think not," and disappears. The theory behind the joke is that
because Descartes says, "I think not," he therefore ceases to exist. While this joke is funny on a superficial level, it does accurately describe Descartes feelings and philosophies regarding the
world around us. Because we are thinking, rational human beings, we therefore exist in reality, rather than in a world made up of illusions.
Speaking of this joke, however, would the context of "I drink, therefore I am," then have the same certainty and impact that Descartes offers as "I think, therefore
I am?" The purpose of this paper is to attempt to answer this question by determining if the physical act of drinking versus the more mental task of thinking would
offer the same impact in the world of Descartes. Before analyzing these two statements against each other, its a good idea to
examine carefully Descartes famous "cogito ergo sum" statement, which was the original Latin for "I think, therefore I exist" - or rather, "I am" (Descartes, Rene). Basically, much of Descartes
