covenant. Though many debate the meaning and the definition of the Torah, when one strips away all the theological trappings, the bottom line still remains Gods covenant with his chosen
people. Jacob Neusers book, Way of Torah, states that the view in which the Torah has been regarded has changed over the years. The Torah is given to the people
and chronicled in Exodus where Moses exhorts the Hebrews to never forget the Exodus, to keep it forever in their memories and the memories of their childrens children. This ordering
of ones life and the life of ones children is reinforced, it can be said, by the story of Pharaohs decree to kill the first born Jewish children living in
Egypt. This is relevant, Neusnar would agree, in that, beyond what was physically done to the children, was the symbolic message: Your children will be immersed and consumed by our
gods and our ways. In this way, it was also a spiritual annihilation. Therefore, the Torah, the covenant is reinforced as the Hebrews begin their journey into the desert.
Both from biblical and theological perspectives, scholars have increasingly recognized the distortions that have crept into the Christian tradition in its understanding of the Old Testament concept of torah. As
such, torah seems to describe that balance between stability and change. Torah is inherent in both the ideas of change and stability, and is the glue which holds them together.
Several examples of this from the Old Testament can be found in Deuteronomy. (Deut 17:18-20, 27:3-26, 28:58-61, 29:20, 30:10, 31:9-11, 26, Josh 1:8, 8:31-34, 23:6, 24:26). These rituals range from
