brought up? For most people, marketing involves advertising on television, through the mail, via the Internet, and so on. But advertising is a very small part of marketing - its
part of promotion which, once again, is an overall part of the marketing mix and marketing concept. Before ads go on television, the marketing-oriented company has already done a great
deal of work on the front end to ensure that the product/service it is producing will sell. The problem with marketing, however, is
that its one of those terms everyone throws around, but few people understand. But marketing is more than sales; it involves a philosophy by which a company is focused on
the needs of the consumer before anything else. Alternative definitions of marketing We know, from our introduction above, that marketing is more
than advertising, though advertising is an important component of a well-thought-out marketing communications plan. But how do we define the overall marketing concept? The answer here is: it depends on
who you talk to. The American Marketing Association defines marketing as "the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering and
