can create a world and a self through the use of language. Analyzing this work by OConnor, Schenck offers that there is more to this short story than the tale, itself. Schenks criticism in her work, Deconstructed Meaning in: A Good Man is Hard to Find, argues that OConnors story highlights the preoccupations of deconstructionist criticism. In Flannery OConnors work, A Good Man is Hard to Find, Schenck argues that the grandmother creates the reality of the situation with her use of language (Shenck 220). The interplay between Mama and the rest of the family is simultaneously humorous and bittersweet. In the end, however, Mamas world comes crashing down around her and her carefully chosen words are inadequate to save her. In the ultimate example of this balance, the grandmother, who has cajoled her family into taking the detour, is forced to listen to the sounds of her family being executed in the woods by the Misfits men and ultimately faces her own death. Yet, she is not bitter. As a matter of fact, it can be said that she understands her killer, better than perhaps he does. In the end, though they have connected on something of an emotional level, The Misfit overreacts to her calling him her son and shoots her repeatedly. Mama is the important character in the story, though the Misfit certainly plays a strong secondary lead. The grandmother is the catalyst for change in the family. She is the outspoken one, the one who determines the fate of everyone else. In the end, this characteristic works against her and is unable to rescue her from death.
