Taylor Caldwell in one of her books, "Dear and Glorious Physician." Caldwells book was published in the late 1950s, a time during which Fidel Castro had taken charge of Cuba
and a time during which the Soviet Union was in its heyday. As we examine the United States these days, this quote could almost seem prescient - though the U.S.
isnt, as yet, headed toward a dictatorship, there is little doubt that the government is taking on more and more of a role in peoples lives, and few are protesting.
But Caldwells comments were not directed toward communist dictatorships nor was she reading the future. Rather, "Dear and Glorious Physician" was a novel
about Luke, who wrote one of the Gospels. Furthermore, the comment was directed to Rome which, at the time of Christ, was doing a good job of degenerating into a
dictatorship. Why this focus on Ancient Rome and its demise? Because there is a great deal of evidence that the United States is
on the same path as the ancient Romans. An examination of the recent U.S. debt crisis brings to mind a couple of similar happenings preceding the fall of the Roman
Empire. First was the emphasis in Ancient Rome on "bread and circuses," which were used to distract the population from real problems besetting the Roman Empire. Second is toe story
