overall vision (typically the CEO). This person probably had a couple of aides he or she went to for advice, but by and large, this person made the decisions, and everyone down followed it. During the Industrial Revolution, these vertical organizational structures, as they were called, had their uses -- employees were mainly hired for assembly line jobs (or assembly line-like jobs), management gave the directives, and supervisors were responsible for enforcing those directives. These days, however, weve moved from an industrial economy to one in which knowledge and service are more important. Weve also moved from markets that are local and regional in nature to those that are global in nature. Because of this, trying to succeed with a vertical organizational structure simply wont work, as such a structure isnt flexible enough to meet the needs of the market today (Ghoshal and Barlett, 1995). As a result, many corporations are adopting a flatter organizational structure (also known as a "horizontal" structure). In the place of the hierarchical top-down structure, these organizations have primarily implemented a more entrepreneurial structure in which more employees are empowered to make decisions on the spot, instead of having to bump requests up the corporate line, which can mean a tie-up in red tape while opportunities are lost. The question becomes, however, how does a company with a flat organizational structure prepare its employees and management for decision making? While the idea that employees are empowered for decision-making is great in theory, in reality, it can be a disaster, especially if employees arent aware of the mission or goals of a particular company.
