analyze a complex decision that involved opening a new college/university branch in Northern Virginia. The new campus would offer up to a masters level education and would cost $3 million.
In any decision-making process, there are various opportunity costs that need to be considered, as well as potential results of each action. Timing
is also a consideration, especially with a university campus; after all, the provosts and others at the university would likely want it open and running for the fall semester. But
other decisions that need to be made are location (based on the populations need) - Northern Virginia also feeds into the DC area, so its likely this was a location
that would cater to those living in the DC region. Given that situation, therefore, other decisions need to be made. There are a
variety of formal methods for making complex decisions. "Gut instinct" alone doesnt cut it (though instinct is usually a pretty good factor when it comes to making some decisions). The
best formal decision-making method in this particular scenario would be the Force Field Analysis. The Force Field Analysis helps the decision-maker determine all of the forces that weigh in favor
of and against a particular decision (Force Field Analysis, 2010). Basically, its a high-class method of weight the pros and cons of a situation (Force Field Analysis, 2010). The question/decision
in this case, of course, is whether its worth our while to open a branch of a university in Northern Virginia that would offer up to a Masters level education.
