"I think, therefore I am," respectively. Its true that Plato is known for his greatest work - The Republic - which discusses everything from government to justice. Its also true
that Descartes famous saying is bandied about some 500 years after his death. But thats not all these philosophers gave to the
world. Both wrote interesting treatises of obtaining knowledge, and how the senses determine and delineate knowledge. In this paper, well examine these two very different - and distinct - philosophies.
While neither are right or wrong, theyre interesting in that they certainly reflect the sign of their times and what was going on in their worlds.
But before comparing and contrasting these two philosophies, it would be a good idea to define them both.
Plato (427-347 BCE) ended up with a long discussion about knowledge in his Thaetetus treaties (Kemerling (b), 2001). His claim to fame, meanwhile, was the philosophy that people dont knowingly
do wrong - but he also introduces the idea of recollection to determine if virtue can be taught (Kemerling (b), 2001). Plato
also supported what was known as the Theory of Ideas, which mainly stated that archetypal ideas (which rest in the universal)(Planeaux, 1999). In his Theory of Ideas, Plato points to
the idea that "the phenomena of any particular object is equivalent to the instantaneous, which is the perishable semblance of the indestructible essential of the objects concept" (Planeaux, 1999). In
other words, ideas make up the whole, or entirety of knowledge, with all knowledge ultimately resting on the supreme idea of Good. (Planeaux, 1999). Platos Republic also discusses human knowledge,
