This is especially true when it comes to poems about death. Though the poet is writing about death, and the darkness of death, in the end, poets
also discuss life, in the midst of death - as death is a natural cycle when it comes to life. If we
were to analyze Langston Hughes "Song for a Dark Girl," wed see the following on the surface: Way Down South in Dixie (Break the heart of me) They
hung my black young lover To a cross roads tree. Way Down South in Dixie (Bruised body high in air) I asked the white Lord Jesus
What was the use of prayer. Way Down South in Dixie (Break the heart of me) Love is a naked shadow On a gnarled and naked tree.
Lets examine the surface of this poem - clearly its about a young girl (a black girl, we can infer),
who has lost her lover in the south. We can assume this came from a lynching (as evidenced by the reference to "Dixie," which lynched black people for just about
any reason even well into the 20th century). But the interesting thing to note that in the midst of the death, the hanging and the references to Jesus Christ, there
is a spark of life. Its also interesting that the woman who is praying is questioning the "white Lord Jesus" about the death of her man; almost as though she
