For the educator, either in the special education class or regular classroom, dealing with a student that has impaired vision can be difficult. However, understanding the disability, its risk factors and its impact on the various developmental stages, can aide the instructor in providing a quality education for the disabled student. BLINDNESS: DEFINITION AND CAUSES * Visual impairment, or blindness, occurs when one or more parts of the eye are so damaged or undeveloped that the images arent received in the brain, or the images cannot be processed once they reach the brain. * Accidents, heredity, and disease can also cause blindness. * Surgeries can possibly restore sight, as in the case of a cataract. A new surgery is called intraocular surgery where they replace the eyes lens. However, only a small percentage are able to have blindness corrected by surgery. IMPACT OF THE DISABILITY * Consider how important non-verbal cues are for learning social skills. Everything from a look of scorn to a dangerous warning stance are not perceived by the visually impaired person(Eaton 1999). Socially, then, blindness impairs the students social abilities. * Visual impairment limits the students ability to fully explore the environment. Without the visual stimulation to move toward something, to be curious about something, there is little desire to learn or interact with anything. Thus, it impacts the child cognitively. * Language is also affected many times if the child has been blind from birth. If the child has been blind since birth, he cannot learn by imitation.
