DBA responsibilities are vast. Spenik & Orryn write that in just running a Microsoft SQL Server, one possible task, the DBAs responsibilities include installing and upgrading the server, monitoring the
servers health and performance, routine maintenance, installing additional disk drives for storage, performing backup and recovery, managing database users and security, assisting developers, and reporting to management.
The 2003 Occupational Outlook Handbook provides that the DBAs general responsibilities are: determining ways to organize and store data, determining user requirements, setting up computer databases,
testing and coordinating changes, ensuring performance, understanding the platform, adding new users, and implementing system security. But this is just the tip
of the iceberg. The Ehie (2002) study to outlined all the interrelated tasks performed by DBAs in 14 companies ranging from stockbrokers to insurance (24 DBAs). A generalist would be
responsible for all of them, but in todays market, these are areas of specialization. The study found the duties of DBAs to be a minimum of the following:
1. Office Systems/Personal Productivity Management. This includes networking all internal systems from telephones to desktop computers to copiers and printers, among others. This category would
include microcomputers, networks, e-mail, voice mail and teleconferencing, which all interface with other databases. This would include design, maintenance and upgrading. 2. Management
