a data warehouse. When the term "data warehouse" comes to mind, the first thing that someone might envision is a huge warehouse, appropriately enough, filled with data. But many of them can be quite small. Data warehousing, in its most basic form, can be defined as "tools, technologies and methodologies that allow for the construction, usage, management and maintenance of the hardware and software used for a data warehouse, as well as the actual data itself (Reed, 2005). Coined by Bill Inmon back in 1990, a data warehouse consists of a subject-oriented, integrated, time-variant and non-volatile collection of data that supports the decision-making process of management (Reed, 2005). Subject orientation is information/data that involves a companys ongoing operation, while integrated data is that gathered into the warehouse from many sources, and combined into a "coherent whole" (Reed, 2005). The data is "time variant" when it is stamped, or identified, with a particular time period -- and its non-volatile because its stored in a particular warehouse (Reed, 2005). In a warehouse, data can be added, but its never removed -- and as a result, management ends up with both a consisted and consistently updated picture of a particular business (Reed, 2005). This is not to say, however, that such warehouses cant be volatile -- while information cannot be moved, only a certain number of periods of history can be kept in specific warehouses (Reed, 2005).
