that they, indeed, are as concerned about the environment in their production, distribution and marketing methods. Dasani, a bottled-water product of the Coca-Cola
Co., espouses a lot of the right eco-friendly copy in an attempt to make users believe that Coca-Cola is becoming environmentally friendly. Its latest initiative is the PlantBottle claims it
is made from up to 30% plant-based materials, while still being 100% recyclable (Dasani, 2010). Other initiatives include its "Give it Back" Recycling Education Program, RecycleBank and development of one
of the worlds largest recycling plant (Dasani, 2010). But the PlantBottle, for all of its hype and apparent "good for the environment" subtext, is still a prime example of greenwashing;
in other words, a company making statements about how green it is (or faking concern for the environment) without it changing its basic ways.
The PlantBottle was announced to great fanfare during May 2009. At that time, the Environmental Leader pointed out that Dasani was the pilot test for the bottle, and that
the new bottle was made from a combination of petroleum-based materials and as much as 30% plant-based materials. The process turns sugar cane and molasses into a component for PET
plastic, with future generations of the bottle relying on other types of plant material (New Dasani Bottle Made Partially of Plant Material, 2009). Furthermore, the use of plant material reduces
the bottles carbon emissions by 25% -- at least according to an Imperial College of London analysis (New Dasani Bottle Made Partially of Plant Material, 2009).
