the Emotions in Man and Animals. Though the work was completed in 1872 many of his initial observations about emotions are still credible. Interestingly enough, Darwin includes both humans and
animals in his exposition on the emotions of anger, pleasure, and fear. What Darwin observed and theorized about so many years ago are still being proven through ongoing modern research.
So what are emotions, anyway, and why do we have them? This seemed to be one of the all encompassing questions that
Darwin raised. What purpose do they fill? Moreso, why are certain expressions often linked with various emotions? Darwins writings on natural man were radical for their day and time, but
today, most researchers stand upon the firm bedrock of his discoveries. Darwins core belief was that emotions are biologically and chemically based as
a reaction to the environment of the animal. Emotions, then, can be said to serve the purpose of inducing certain chemicals to be released into the bloodstream and the composition
of the body so as to feel pleasure and to relax the body, or to protect the body and preserve it from harm. Examined in this way, then, emotions are
biologically based phenomenon and explains why animals experience many of the same emotions that humans do. Presently, the new research seems to
bear this out. Frans B.M. de Waal, Ph.D., of Emory Universitys Yerkes Primate Center, studies primates, in particularly their facial expressions and gestures. What Waal has discovered is that all
