all about. The monkeys-into-humans concept is how scientists interpreted many of Darwins ideas. What Darwin was best known for was his theory of natural evolution, or survival of the fittest. For this paper the web site theory-of-evolution.org was accessed. While the author, Stu Pullen, does not agree that simple life evolves into complex life as Darwin postulated, however, for purposes of linking genetics and Darwins research, Pullens information will be fine for defining Darwins theory, the origins of life, and the links to genetics. Darwins main hypothesis, as most people know, was the idea that life evolved. While this was not anew concept, Darwin was the first to offer a scientific explanation as to why this happened (Pullen, 2002). His main theory was that as environments changed, members of species changed to better fit into the changing environment. He also introduced the concept of survival of the fittest, which is what fits into the pattern of genetics and traits passed on from parents to offspring. In order to better understand how species members pass on characteristics to their offspring, a brief explanation of genetics is in order. Simply defined, genes are chemicals that determine traits and characteristics of animals and plants (Pullen, 2002). The first genetic experiments involved ears of corn; these days, genetics are being used to determine who is likely to get breast cancer or who might be predisposed to depression. Genetics, for example, determines how many blue-eyed people will be born to a couple. Even if neither parent has blue eyes, one of them carries the gene for blue eyes (meaning that a grandparent ...
