was ridiculed as being too young, too inexperienced, too good looking and too rich. And it seemed as though everything that came out of his mouth and everything he did was wrong - and because it was wrong, it was ridiculed and satirized by columnists and comedians alike. The battered image he sustained in the media likely as not made it difficult for citizens of the United States to take Vice President Dan Quayle seriously. This, in turn, hurt him when he attempted to help his boss gain re-election in 1992, and it also hurt his run for president in 1996. Although he attempted to refurbish his image by remaining poised and appearing intelligent in both campaigns, the damage had been done during the preceding four years in office. Quayles first problem with the media was that he was woefully underprepared when he was selected as Bushs vice presidential running mate in 1988 (Connolly (b), 1992). Quayle literally came out of nowhere, or so most of the pundits thought - he had little experience in office (he had been a freshman senator just four years before being tapped for the VP position), he was from a state (Indiana) that offered little in the way of Electoral Votes (as that state had voted Republican since time immemorial), and he simply didnt know how to react to the limelight (Connolly (b), 1992). What didnt help Quayles cause was the rumor that Bush selected him for his youth - that Quayles youth and good looks would attract women to vote for the Republican ticket.
